Thesis Instructions at Karelia University of Applied Sciences : Use of AI in Karelia UAS Theses

The following instructions describe the stages of the thesis process at Karelia University of Applied Sciences, from the choice of the topic to the publications of the thesis. The related forms and templates are also enclosed.

Use of AI in Karelia UAS Theses

1. Purpose of use. AI applications can be used to help, for example, for

  • brainstorming on the main themes of the topic, designing the structure of the work and choosing the research method.
  • general discussion and guidance on problem areas ("how to proceed...", "I have the following problem..., what are the possible options to solve it", etc.)
  • planning and brainstorming for information retrieval. (Note that AI cannot retrieve information systematically and the sources it produces may be incorrect. The databases recommended by the Karelia Library (karelia.finna.fi) should be used to find information for the thesis. For more information, see the library's Search and Find guide.)
  • checking the correctness of language and translating your own text.
  • AI should not be used to analyse the data collected. For example, survey or interview data should not be fed into AI.

2. Originality. Students are responsible for the content of their thesis. The author must ensure that the ideas and thoughts contained in the thesis are their own or are generally known. When using AI to translate a text or to check its grammar, for example, make sure that the content of the original text is not substantially altered. AI is only a tool and a research assistant.

3. Copyright. AI is not an original scientific source of information. The text it produces is neither error-free nor original. Always check the accuracy of the information and refer to the original sources.

4. Data protection. Do not enter sensitive, confidential or privacy-sensitive information (name, contact details, date of birth, social security number, student number, etc.) into your conversation with the AI. Please read the terms of use and privacy policy of the applications.

5. Transparency. Students are expected to be transparent in their use of AI. If shortcomings are identified, Karelia may launch a review process to assess the use of AI. The use of AI in the thesis should be described in the introductory chapter and, if necessary, in more detail in the implementation and reflection process. Explain the introductory chapter

  • which AI applications (e.g. ChatGPT, Bing, Bard, DeepL, Grammarly ) you use in your thesis
  • how they have been used (e.g. for information retrieval, brainstorming, language checking, translation, visualisation).

If you are referring to an AI application as software or to a conversation you had with an AI application, please use the Karelia Reporting instructions.

6. Instructions. This guide will be kept up to date by updating it when necessary.

If you wish, you can use your Karelia email address to log in to the AI, but do not use the same password you use to log in to Karelia's systems.

These instructions are based on the instructions of Satakunta University of Applied Sciences.

Karelia's general guide to using AI in your studies can be found in the Student Intra Pakki
