At Karelia, theses are communicated and tracked in Wihi, which is a system for supervising and managing thesis projects. Both the student and the advisor(s) use Wihi throughout the thesis process.
The Wihi system can be found at https://karelia.wihi.fi
How to start and make a topic proposal in Wihi?
- Log in to Wihi using your Karelia user ID (username and password). Then create a topic proposal.
- If you pursue a thesis together with someone as pair work, only one of you makes the topic proposal and adds the other student to the field Invite group members.
- Write a working title for your thesis as a topic proposal. In English-mediated programmes, copy the English title to the field requiring the thesis title in Finnish. Specialisation is needed only in some master-level programmes.
- Enter the start date and estimated end date of your thesis.
- Choose the thesis type: Product-based/Research/Portfolio-Diary/Master’s thesis. NB! Students in master-level programmes choose Master’s thesis.
- Describe the content, objectives and outcomes of your thesis.
- If your thesis is a commissioned assignment, add information on the commissioner to your topic proposal.
- Before sending your proposal, you need to commit to complying with good scientific practice (required).
- When you submit the topic proposal, the thesis coordinator of your programme is notified. If your topic is accepted, the coordinator will assign an advisor (or advisors) for your work.
- Once your principal advisor (supervisor) has also approved the topic proposal, both of you will be able to access the initial view for the thesis in Wihi.
Phases of the thesis
- When your topic proposal is approved and you have an advisor, a Thesis phases window will appear.
- For the Project plan field, choose the date (current date)
- Then you can write a message to your advisor in order to set the first thesis appointment.
- You can also upload documents, such as your literature review or thesis commission agreement to Wihi.
- When you click Create Task, you can plan, describe and schedule tasks for your thesis project.
- Thesis coordinators see all files and messages that are shared between the student and the advisor in Wihi. Confidential files, however, make an exception. They can only be seen by the student and the advisor.
Advancing the thesis process in Wihi
- In Phase 1 and Phase 2, you take your thesis further with the support of your thesis advisor. When you proceed from one phase to the next, the evaluation (HYV = PASS) is transferred to Peppi.
- Additionally, in phases 1 and 2, you agree on the appointments and seminars with your thesis advisor as required by your degree programme.
- When you enter Phase 3, you finalise your thesis and set the dates for the results seminar and your maturity test with your advisor according to the conventions of your degree programme. Then you return the final version of your thesis for assessment via Turnitin plagiarism detection software. Check that the title of the thesis is the final title of the thesis in Wihi. Note! Do not use a long dash (-) between the main title and the subtitle, as it will be transmitted to Pepp and the evaluation form as a code, i.e. it will not be displayed correctly. Use a colon (:) or period (.) between the main title and the subheading.
- When your thesis is assessed and you have proceeded to the Thesis evaluation phase, you upload the final version of your thesis to Theseus. The system will give you a permanent link to your thesis on the Internet (URN address that follows the form of https://urn.fi/URN:NBN:fi:..). You need to copy the address to Wihi in order to receive the final grade. Wihi requires the whole path (address) starting with https://. NB! There is a delay of a few hours until the link works in Theseus. If you publish your work only as a cover version, please add the following text to the Theseus link in Wihi: http://urn.fi/URN:NBN:fi
- When your advisor has checked the link, the thesis process has come to an end and you can download the evaluation statement from Wihi.
