Thesis Instructions at Karelia University of Applied Sciences : Contents of and Learning Outcomes for the Thesis

The following instructions describe the stages of the thesis process at Karelia University of Applied Sciences, from the choice of the topic to the publications of the thesis. The related forms and templates are also enclosed.

Contents of and Learning Outcomes for the Thesis

Study module: Thesis 15 cr.

Competences: Deep content knowledge in the field, professional development, process management, critical thinking and research competence

Implementation time: 3rd – 4th year

Prior studies: Previous degree studies

General instructions: Each degree programme takes care of and manages the reporting, seminar and supervision procedures and practices in the programme.

Study units:

Thesis Plan 5 cr.

Learning outcomes: The student

  •    is able to write a literature review to build a knowledge base for the thesis
  •    is able to create a feasible and realistic plan for the thesis

Core content:

  •    commissioned thesis assignment
  •    creation of the knowledge base
  •    choice of methods
  •    planning seminar

Thesis Implementation 5 cr.

Learning outcomes: The student

  • can search, collect and analyse data for a professional development or research task
  • is able to implement a product according to the professional development task (practice- based thesis)
  • is able to apply the necessary research methods to the professional development tasks (research-based thesis)

Core content:

  •  data collection and analysis
  •  design and development of the product

Thesis Reporting 5 cr.

Learning Outcomes: The student

  • is able to produce a formal academic and logically constructed report and follow the thesis instructions of Karelia UAS.
  • is able to make reliable conclusions based on the previous knowledge and the outcomes of the thesis process.
  • is able to critically evaluate his/her own work.

  • writing a thesis report
  • results seminar
  • maturity test
