Thesis Instructions at Karelia University of Applied Sciences : Publishing the Thesis

The following instructions describe the stages of the thesis process at Karelia University of Applied Sciences, from the choice of the topic to the publications of the thesis. The related forms and templates are also enclosed.

Publishing the Thesis

Since the thesis is a compulsory part of tertiary studies, it must be subject and open to public evaluation. All accepted thesis reports are always public.

The approved thesis is submitted to the national Open Repository Theseus for publication after the thesis assessment is ready and you have the permit for publication from your supervisor. You are responsible for the publication of your own work in Theseus

Accessibility in Thesis

Accessibility means the consideration and advancement of human diversity in digital services. An accessible thesis is created in such a way that it can be accessed by people of seeing and reading disabilities with assistive technology, for example computer screen readers. Creating an accessible thesis requires that you will convert it into PDF format using the appropriate procedure.

First, you must make the original Word document accessible. The requirements for accessibility are noted in the thesis template of Karelia UAS. Therefore, the template is to be used when you write your thesis report. The Word document should be converted into a PDF/A file in order to be saved in Theseus.

Instructions for converting your thesis to a PDF/A file are available in Theseus.

Uploading a Thesis to Theseus

Upload your thesis report when it has been assessed and you have received the permit from your supervisor. You can only upload your thesis report once to Theseus, and it cannot be edited afterwards. Therefore, it is important that you upload the final version that has been approved by your supervisor. Make sure that the title of your thesis report is the same on the cover and abstract!

Name your thesis report with the file name form of Surname_Firstname_yyyy.mm.dd.pfd. (yyyy=year, mm=month, dd=date.) The date is the date of the uploading. Allowed characters are 1-9, a-z, A-Z, _, - and space.

An example for naming a file:

Turunen_Tanja.pdf

For further help see Instructions for Uploading A Thesis in Theseus.

The thesis will be available in Theseus once the library has accepted your upload. The library aims at handling uploads during the same day between the office hours (8-16). Make sure that your thesis report is available in Theseus. When it is available there, it has also been saved to the electronic thesis archive of Karelia UAS.

The Theseus system will give you a permanent link to your thesis on the Internet (URN address that follows the form of https://urn.fi/URN:NBN:fi:..). You need to copy the address to Wihi in order to receive the final grade. Wihi requires the whole path (address) starting with https://. NB! There is a delay of a few hours until the link works in Theseus.

Publishing Thesis in Print

If you do not upload your thesis report in Theseus, your thesis is to be published in a printed and bound version (black cardboard or hard covers do not need printing). Send your thesis report as a PDF to opinnayte(a)karelia.fi and deliver a bound copy to Student Services of Karelia UAS (Address: Tikkarinne 9). Thesis binding services are provided for example by Joensuun Insinööriopiskelijat ry and Grano Oy. Student Services will deliver your bound thesis to the library of Karelia UAS that will then add the necessary labels. After this, your thesis will be available and can be borrowed from the library.

If you publish your work only as a cover version, please add the following text to the Theseus link in Wihi: http://urn.fi/URN:NBN:fi
