Thesis Instructions at Karelia University of Applied Sciences : Use of Sources – General Principles

The following instructions describe the stages of the thesis process at Karelia University of Applied Sciences, from the choice of the topic to the publications of the thesis. The related forms and templates are also enclosed.

Use of Sources – General Principles

The sources used in the thesis have to be reported. There are different types of sources that you can refer to. They can include, for example,

  •    print texts such as books or scientific journals
  •    online texts such as e-books and company websites
  •    audio-visual materials and recordings, such as YouTube videos, and
  •    oral sources such as interviews.

Mark the sources with in-text citations and create a list of all the references to the end of your report. Without in-text citations, the information, thoughts or opinions are considered to reflect your own knowledge or ideas.

Sources should also be marked to the pictures, tables and figures. You have to have permission to use them if they are copyright protected materials. Make note of such information as part of the description.

Paraphrase the information that you have retrieved from sources. With the adept use of referencing and paraphrasing techniques you can show that you have understood the source text well. There are no shortcuts to skilful referencing and paraphrasing. However, you may apply the following:

  •    Read the source text carefully.
  •    Take down notes while reading.
  •    Consider how the text relates to your own thesis.
  •    Paraphrase to create your own text.

If you use sources that are written in other languages than English, do not only translate word-by-word, but interpret and express the meanings using your own words and appropriate language and style.

You may also use direct quotations copying the exact wording of the original source. However, use direct quotations sparingly and only in select situations. Direct quotes are commonly used for such text passages as definitions, legal documentation or data extracts.

Direct quotations are placed between quotation marks. If the quote is longer than three lines, indent it 1.5 cm, change the line spacing to 1 and remove quotation marks. If you delete parts of the quotation, mark the removed words with a double dash. End the quotation with in-text citation in the same way as elsewhere in the text.

Citing a reference shows to the reader of the work where its author has utilized - - information in an external source. By doing so the author gives the original author or authors credit for this information instead of claiming to be the original source of this information him or herself.  There are also other, perhaps more practical, reasons for citing and referencing. - - this practice, in principle, enables the reader of the work to obtain the cited source in order to ensure that the author has used the information in the source correctly - -. (Nokelainen 2011, 6.)

"Replace at least a few be verbs in every paragraph with active, unusual verbs. A sentence powered by vivid verbs - - will speak to your readers more effectively than one that contains only forms of be - - and predictable academic verbs” (Sword 2012, 60.)

Using AI tools

Learning the skills needed in the world of work is important for students at UAS.  AI-based applications are examples of tools that will be increasingly used in the workplace. ChatGPT, for example, can generate text based on questions provided by the user and improve it according to the user's guidance.

If you use AI tools in an assignment or thesis, you should always mention them. You are always responsible for the content of the text you return.

Karelia expects students to use AI applications responsibly and ethically in their studies. You must always mention the use of AI in the assignment or thesis you return and describe how you have used it. It is dishonest if you present the text, image or other output produced by the AI as your own.

In cases of fraud, the general guidelines for dealing with fraud will be followed. Karelia-amk is committed to following the Research Integrity Guidelines by The Finnish National Board on Research Integrity (TENK).
