Thesis Instructions at Karelia University of Applied Sciences : Research Permits

The following instructions describe the stages of the thesis process at Karelia University of Applied Sciences, from the choice of the topic to the publications of the thesis. The related forms and templates are also enclosed.

Research Permits

  1. Before you start your thesis, find out if you need a research permit for your thesis.
  2. Apply for the research permission with the help of your thesis supervisor.
  3. Do not start the implementation or data collection until you have been granted the research permit.

You must enquire from the organisation or community that you study whether you need to receive a research permit. The need for permission has to be resolved before the implementation of a practice-based thesis or the data collection of a research-based thesis. The permission has to be applied not later than at the planning stage. It also has to be approved by the thesis supervisor.

Several organisations have their own forms for research permits or informed consent. The student should use these. If the organisation does not have its own form, the corresponding form of Karelia UAS should be used.

Research permits differ between fields. Especially in the Social Services and Health Care, special focus should be paid on ethical aspects when planning the thesis and requesting for research permits. The research permissions procedure in other fields vary according to the organisation and field. In addition to the organisational research permit, you are also responsible for obtaining the informed consent from the participants of your research.
